Guatemala Service & Immersion Experience
A 10-day service learning and cultural immersion experience for BHGH Scholars and Affiliate Staff in the U.S., in partnership with Esperanza Juvenil (BHGH of Guatemala).

Participants will experience a personal introduction to the heart of the Mayan world through the eyes of their fellow Guatemalan BHGH scholars and staff. They will have an opportunity to share in the lives, daily routines and future hopes of the Scholars and Staff of Esperanza Juvenil’s Elementary and Middle School and eight residential homes. Each day will also provide a path to learning about the rich history, customs, activities and traditions of the most populous country in Central America.

10 – 14 BHGH Scholars (9th – 12th graders) and 4 BHGH Affiliate Team Members
Guatemala (Guatemala City, Santo Domingo Xenacoj, Lake Atitlan, and Antigua)
- Develop linkages with other US and Guatemalan BHGH scholars to support one another after the program
- Visit with innovative leaders of Guatemala and learn how they are creating positive social change in their communities
- Volunteer in various Guatemalan communities in side-by-side service with Esperanza Juvenil Scholars and Staff
- Explore connections between spiritual growth and service learningExperience the ecosystems of the central Guatemala highlands, the colonial charm of Antigua and modern development of Guatemala City
$400 per selected BHGH Scholar + round-trip airfare from home Affiliate to Guatemala. Potential availability of travel scholarships to be determined. Flights will be coordinated centrally to ensure people are traveling in small groups. Affiliates are encouraged to help scholars participate locally in fundraising to cover their costs.
Travel for selected team members will be covered by the BHGH International Office.
BHGH International Staff, BHGH of Guatemala Staff, BHGH Affiliate Staff, and other professional BHGH volunteers.
All BHGH Scholars and team members interested in participating in the Guatemala Service and Immersion Experience should complete the online application and essay by Friday, February 16, 2018. Team member applications are limited to those who work directly with scholars and have celebrated 2.5 years or more on staff at BHGH. Applications will be reviewed by the BHGH International Office to select 10 – 12 Scholars and 4 Affiliate team members. Selected participants will be notified by Friday, March 2, 2018.
